Special Students Send Letters to Special Troops

Cub Scout Pack 11 and Boy Scout Troop 11 of the Special Programs Division at The Children’s Learning Center of United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County wrote letters to the troops serving in the armed forces. The CLC provides education, evaluation and clinical treatment for children and young adults challenged by disabilities.  Over 250 children, ages 2 – 21 from communities all over Nassau County attend school at the CLC.

The troop leaders informed the young scouts that the brave men and women of the armed forces fight on a daily basis to keep us all safe and that, unfortunately some of these men and women have gotten hurt while fighting for our safety and freedom. The boys then wrote letters to injured soldiers using picture symbols to complete prepared sentence templates. Using symbols enabled each scout to compose a letter regardless of his level of ability. Following the letter writing campaign, Jim Ferris, Special Programs Division Commissioner, Theodore Roosevelt Council, BSA, and Vietnam War Veteran answered questions about what it was like to be a soldier. It was a very meaningful troop gathering. Cub Scout Pack 11 and Boy Scout Troop 11 would like to wish the troops in the armed forces, “A Peaceful, Healthy New Year!”
